Lantangan Elementary School is on Gigantes Sur Island.
Gigantes Sur is part of the Gigantes, a group of 10 islands off the north east coast of Panay around 18kms from the mainland.
Devasted by Typhoon Ursula (Phanfone) on Christmas Day 2019
Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013
and by Typhoon Frank (Fengshen) in 2008
Lantangan faces a continual struggle to provide an education and help to its students and families who rely solely on subsistence fishing for their income.
Around 90% of the houses on the Gigantes Islands were destroyed.
Due to it’s lack of communication facilities the students and teachers face even more challenging conditions with the current Covid restrictions.
With it’s entire Kindergarten and at least 25% of the students last year recipients of the school based feeding program and classified as malnourished the school struggles to provide the 16 pesos a day required to provide meals for these children.
