Gigantes Sur is part of the Gigantes, a group of 10 islands off the north east coast of Panay around 18kms from the mainland.

Typhoons

Devasted by Typhoon Ursula (Phanfone) on Christmas Day 2019 , Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 and by Typhoon Frank (Fengshen) in 2008

Lantangan faces a continual struggle to provide an education and help to its students and families who rely solely on subsistence fishing for their income.

Around 90% of the houses on the Gigantes Islands were destroyed.

Lantangan Elementary School

Communications

Due to it’s lack of communication facilities the students and teachers face challenging conditions with very poor phone and internet coverage.

Feeding program

With it’s entire Kindergarten and at least 25% of the students last year recipients of the school based feeding program and classified as malnourished the school struggles to provide the 16 pesos a day required to provide meals for these children.

How we help

Initially we were able to provide photocopying paper to help with the modular work the students now need to complete while they are no longer in school.

In 2021 three students, Isabelle Marie F Bantillo, Trisha Faye A Belasa and Aeon Zhaira M Libre were awarded prizes for their hard work during the difficult covid period.

In September 2022 ODE provided the school with 25 8 inch android tablets. These tablets are supplied with educational software which do not require any connection to the internet and makes them an ideal system for use in the school.

Did you know?

It is a two hour boat ride from the mainland and has around 860 students.
